I don't think that the dark scheme makes things difficult in any way but I think that the light scheme is actually a bit abrasive for long periods. User control for contrast/brightness would be great.
Another idea, but really more of a gimmick maybe, is to add jpg or bmp support. Some hosts got something like this for the background of the whole daw or for single parts, and the users are free to choose whatever they like then, darker colour, lighter, pictures, whatever.
I was thinking of adding contrast and brightness sliders. Would that help?

AudioMulch 1.0 had background image support. I dropped it in version 2.0. I don't think anyone complained.
(brightness/contrast sliders are now implemented for version 2.2 btw.)
