I'm planning a separate FM contraption which should support stuff like that (one input modulates another). That's one of the ideas I'll start working on when AM2.1 is finished
Im browsing through these forums as I get deeper into AM. I dont know how active Ross is here anymore, but at any rate, I would like to state that an FM contraption would be absolutely awesome. Especially for someone like me who prefers to use AM "natively" (i.e. without any 3rd party plugins).
Hehe, sure thats just my personal preference at this moment. I like to work within certain limitations, it gets my creative juices flowing:)
I find that especially true now that I have started using software again, where you essentially have unlimited options. Altough, i have considered acquiring a reverb plugin other than nastyverb.
Is an effect technically possible, that has only audioinputs but can produce real FM, not ringmodulation?
Synthesizers that produce fm are there a lot, only that Ross' sound generators are easy and effective until yet. Native is a lot of work.
Sound improvements can get nowhere, that's why I suggest VSTs. I'd like to see a lead producer that masters sync and fm and has sinus oscillators. It would complete AM for those who has little money. Make suggestions, how it could be better than: Little One, xhun audio; Helix, Audjoo; xils 4, xils-lab; FM8, native instruments.
AM could be better than e.g. live or FL in many points. I think that is the competition.
I agree that AM is not supposed to compete with monster soft synths like Absynth and Diva etc. But a couple more simple sound generators would be a good thing. The strength of AM (to me, at least) is using fairly simple contraptions in order to construct complex, organic environments. Its very much a case of the sum exceeding the parts. I believe a fairly simple FM sound generator would fit nicely in this paradigm.
Maybe something with sidechain fm, that form the fm intensity internally with an envelope to have an easy control. It works side by side with a volume control of the whole sound triggered by a gate(stepsequencer). Works well together with sync(in my korg ms 20 M). Maybe it is good to have a detune mode per key, because the key can have a chaotic character(without sync), a phase sync could be helpful, too.

Ross.
sweet!
This sounds sweet.
FM / Cross-modulation would be great!
nice!
waiting for the FM to start playing now
;)
This thread started about a year ago. I wonder if there is any progress about this?
Well, the contraption is still an experiment with no practical progress. I've been working on other things (that are stated on the roadmap).
But "new contraptions" is listed on the roadmap so if there is sufficient interest in this particular contraption I could work on it some more.

@Kant: ditto (except for the bit about the 3rd-party plugins :-)

Yes, it would round the things off and its more sympathetic to think not in competition. Nice argument!

Best thing I've found for simple FM in Audiomulch is Borogove's Femme VST:

Ah, seems like femme is Windows only (Im using a Mac).
