My latest two releases (those are still available) are both based on live performances I did with mulch and edited with Reaper at home.
Both can be streamed for free through my bandcamp site (and bought in digital format for very little money) or you can buy 3" cdr's through my website.
My website also has a player containing more music I have done in the past. All the pieces there are done with audiomulch.
Like your work, Orphax. Care to share how you use Mulch to create some of your sounds?
Thanks a lot.
Actually I can share some files I have done with mulch, but those are not the things I do in my music. I used them as examples at the 12K forum to show some nice tricks in Mulch.
Here are they:
Simple auto-synthesis example 1
Simple auto-synthesis example 2
Some fiddling around
For my own music I can't really show because I use a huge amount of wav recordings which are processed by mulch.
Wow! Excellent stuff. Thank you for sharing :o)
Do you do a lot of pre-production of files and suchlike? I mean, do you recording 'songs' in Logic or ProTools and then import them into AM, or is it captured stuff that you turn into tracks in AM?
Nope, almost everything is done in mulch.
Sometimes I edit the samples in sound forge (eq, cutting and volume) and sometimes I work with Reaper to do some post-editing after working with mulch.
Mastering and the finishing touch is now also slowly moving to Reaper, which is yet another program that I love to use.
At this moment I am working on a piece that uses about 20 tracks recorded with mulch that I am layering and such in Reaper because it is easier with cutting and pasting and things like that. But if I would have to perform it live I could easily do it with mulch these days.
Ah, cool. So you start with some material, 'jam it out', and then edit it together at the end? Excellent stuff.
Those layouts are genius; the self-synthesising one is quality. Do you use the automation features when playing live?
Sorry for so many questions!
Depends, sometimes I don't edit any thing in the end.
Same goes for the automation, although it's a rare thing that I use it.
If I use it is mainly the start samples and the stop them.
For studio works I do use the automation usually to edit volumes and such. Nothing spectacular.
;)
Wow, has been a while since I posted here.
Though, while I was searching for some tips thought I could just post an update here as well.
I have a new release out that is made with Audiomulch.
It is an EP called "Die Helden Sind Nicht Mehr".
Just check it out here http://www.orphax.com and here http://orphax.bandcamp.com/album/die-helden-sind-nicht-mehr
Free full-length stream available.
Hi Ophax.
Many thanks indeed for posting the files.
Great sounds there.
Paul.
Thanks Paul, much appreciated.
There is btw. much new (and old) work up for streaming at http://soundcloud.com/orphax at this moment.
Most of it is made with muchl (just a few things are without)
Try for example this live performance I did with mulch: http://soundcloud.com/orphax/live-at-occii
Hope you all enjoy listening to these.
I've been looking closely at your auto-synthesis example, posted some time ago, and I can't for the life of me see how it makes any sound! It seems to be all effects and filters, no source(s). What's going on there? I am v. impressed that you could devise such a thing - something so complex from seemingly nothing. The mysteries of 'Mulch are fathomless.
I must honestly admit I have no clue how it actually does work. I only know it does.
There must be something that triggers the sound, but I have no clue what.
But I like this concept, I have incorporated the concept in pieces in my forth-coming cd as well.
Maybe Ross can give us some insights on how this actually works.
The simple answer is that feedback is generated between contraptions. Somewhere in the document, there will be a contraption further down (or along) an audio path sending signal back/up to an earlier one...
There are lots of possibilities for generating feedback loops in AM. It is also my understanding that limiting is automatically applied to feedback paths in a document - which is why these FB loops never totally "explode". There are (at least) a few examples of feedback networks in the examples too. Check out Examples/Apllied/Elementals.
Well, I understand what the feedback loop does, but a feedback loop in a digital world that is actually working is pretty strange. A contreption from itself shouldn't generate sound if it is just an effect.
But guess it is something build in the program to "fake" the real deal.
And indeed there are some nice examples in the mulch package. Might have been my source of inspiration even. It is too long ago to remember though.
I liked those pieces a lot, Orphax. A nice balance of cerebral and visceral. But I'll have to listen to them several more times. Good Mulching!
No new music, but a short video of my newest live setup running audiomulch on my netbook with USB stick soundcard (which isn't that good actually, but it is fun enough).

Sounds nice. I'd like a bit more insight into your use of the cat contraption, though.
